Why Lagos has epileptic power supply
The
Federal Ministry of Power has blamed the epileptic power supply in
major parts of Lagos State on the ongoing rehabilitation of Kainji
and Shiroro Hydro-power dams.
Mr Cdon Adinuba, the Special Adviser on Media to the Minister of
Power, Prof. Barth Nnaji on Friday.Adinuba said that the Kainji
dam, with installed capacity of 760 megawatts, was only generating
about 233 megawatts.
``We have shut down Shiroro dam for rehabilitation to prevent what
happened at Kanji Dam from recurring at the station. The dam will
come back on full stream today. Many other factors are responsible
for the current electricity supply in the country. One of such
factors is the issue of gas, which is being attended to at the
higher level,’’ he said.
Adinuba said that the dams were having problems due to the ageing
plants. He said that the dams were constructed in 1968 and had not
been properly maintained. Some residents in Lagos said that they
had been without electricity in the last two months.
